There is crucial link between development, the eco-system, and well-being of an individual. It is critically important to conserve, nurture, and protect the environment as it plays a pivotal role in poverty eradication, economic growth, and improved health.
Some of the initiatives carried out:
- Shankhumukham Revamping and Conservation Project (SRCP)
SRCP was launched in Shankhumukham, a beach located 8 km from Trivandrum, in collaboration with the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation and the local self- government of Kerala with the aim of revamping the beach and creating awareness among the general populace on the importance of protecting the coastal eco-system.
Components of the project:
- Material Recovery Facility to help segregate waste
- Eco-friendly waste disposal system
- Cleaning drives
- Garden area to enhance the landscape
Rainwater harvesting project
Rainwater harvesting is crucial to mitigate the effects of depleting ground water levels and fluctuating climate conditions. It is one of the most effective methods of water management and water conservation and involves collection and storage of rainwater at surface or in subsurface aquifers. Capturing the rainwater can help recharge local aquifers, reduce urban flooding and, most importantly, ensure availability of water in scarce zones.
Components of the project:
- Surface runoff harvesting
The surface runoff which would have otherwise depleted into the oceans is directed to rainwater pits which have helped in bringing about a tremendous increase in the ground water table.
- Rooftop rainwater harvesting
Rainwater from the roof of the house is collected, purified, treated, and directed to one of the following channels:
- Ferro cement tanks
- Existing wells
- Bore wells
- Recharge pits
Environmental awareness
Focus is placed on helping the general populace understand the fragility of the planet and underscore the importance of respecting, protecting and preserving the environment. Towards this end, environmental education is advocated to inculcate the value of environmental ethics.

- Promotion of kitchen gardens
- Tree plantation drives
- Distribution of saplings, seeds, seed balls, and grow bags
- Energy conservation drives

- Reduction of the usage of plastic
- Encouragement of an eco-friendly lifestyle
- Promotion of bio-fertilizers and organic fertilizers which result in healthy and quality products, less degradation of soil, and reduced eutrophication of water bodies
